Preparation, Installation and after-care of your new Lawn.

Preparation of the site :
Remove any previous grass by spraying with a glyphosate product e.g. Roundup and allow the old grass to die back before working the soil to a depth of 15 cms. and burying all the old vegetation. At the same time remove any large objects such as stones.

Work the top 6 cms. to a tilth and level by raking. If necessary import good quality Lawns2go tops soil to level up to existing surroundings. All the time the bed should be firmed but not compacted by tamping down either with the boot heel or a rake head to leave an even, fine bed.

Work into the top layer 3.5kgs/100 m2 Lawns2go 'Seed and Turf Starter' fertiliser.

Your site is now ready for the installation of your lawn :-

Turf Laying
Working from a convenient edge and off a plank to prevent spoiling the bed, lay the turf rolls end to end, trimming to fit any odd shapes with a sharp knife. Lay the turf in a straight line.

Butt the roll ends and sides up against each other, being careful not to stretch the rolls. (There will inevitably be a minute amount of shrinkage that may be enough to leave gaps if the turf is stretched to fit.)

The turf will knit in fastest if the rolls are laid in a stagger – like bricks in a wall.

Water well immediately. The turf should be wet right through to the bed beneath and then kept wet for at least two weeks – until the roots have regrown enough for the turf to have knitted into the soil below and are able absorb water naturally.

Keep off for two weeks.

Seed Sowing
Grass seed germination is quite temperature sensitive which varies from species to species. Generally soil temperatures need to be 10C - normally by April. Seed needs to be evenly distributed within the top 10 mms. of soil.

Use a purpose built applicator calibrated to the manufacturer’s specification to ensure an even seed distribution and rake over gently to incorporate the seed into the soil.

Sowing rates will vary depending on time of year and soil type but we recommend generally between 35 grammes per square metre for Baritone and Shade Master; 50 grammes per square metre of Soprano.

Roll the seed area flat whilst taking care not to damage the new lawn with footprints. Water well with a fine droplet sprinkler.

Ryegrass will germinate within 10 days – other species may take 3 weeks and during this time is very susceptible to damage. Keep off for 5 weeks.

Mowing
In periods of strong growth – Spring and Summer lawns grown from turf will require mowing after 2 – 3 weeks – those from seed 5 – 6 weeks. Seeded lawns should be rolled with a garden roller a day before mowing to press in any worm casts and other uneven features. By the next day the grass will have stood up again.

The mower should be in good condition with sharp blades to ensure a clean cut that will not damage the grass. At the first mowing the mower height should be set so as not to remove more than 35% of the leaf area. Mow once a week and the height can gradually be reduced to 25 to 30 mms. (or as desired.)

Aftercare
A quality lawn has a high density plant population which requires feeding if it is to remain healthy. Generally it will require a feed one of the lawns2go fertilisers – either 'Early Riser' or 'Autumn Greener', every 6 to 8 weeks except if under drought conditions.

Regular mowing is the most important activity to keep your lawn in good condition. Infrequent mowing allows strong dominant grasses to overwhelm the finer species leading to a deterioration of the sward.
